RESUMO

This paper reports experimental results on the removal of Cd(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions using hydrophilic carbon nanoparticles (HNPs) supported over silica beads to enhance their separation from treated water. The supported HNPs (SHNPs) exhibit high removal efficiencies especially at neutral pH and low temperature (10 °C), conditions that commonly occur for natural water remediation and for some types of industrial wastewater. The maximum adsorption capacity of the SHNPs at a reference concentration of 0.2 mM is 0.042 mmol g-1, 0.027 mmol g-1 and 0.055 mmol g-1 for Cd(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) ions, respectively. Modelling analysis on the adsorption isotherms revealed that the free Gibbs' energy of interactions between the sorbent and Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions is higher than that of Cd(II) ions indicating that the sorbents are more affine to intermediate acids, as Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions, than to soft acids, as Cd(II) ions. The sorbents exhibit appreciable adsorption capacities per gram of active phase (0.54 mg g-1 for Cd(II) ions, 13.48 mg g-1 for Ni(II) ions and 8.87 mg g-1 for Pb(II) ions) at the corresponding quality limit admitted by Italian regulations on wastewater, suggesting their possible use in water treatment plants.

RESUMO

Autoimmune diseases are complex disorders of unknown etiology thought to result from interactions between genetic and environmental factors. We aimed to verify whether environmental pollution from diesel engine exhaust nanoparticulate (DEP) of actually operating vehicles could play a role in the development of a rare immune-mediated disease, systemic sclerosis (SSc), in which the pathogenetic role of environment has been highlighted. The effects of carbon-based nanoparticulate collected at the exhaust of newer (Euro 5) and older (Euro 4) diesel engines on SSc skin keratinocytes and fibroblasts were evaluated in vitro by assessing the mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1 α , IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α) and fibroblast chemical mediators (metalloproteases 2, 3, 7, 9, and 12; collagen types I and III; VEGF). DEP was shown to stimulate cytokine gene expression at a higher extent in SSc keratinocytes versus normal cells. Moreover, the mRNA gene expression of all MMPs, collagen types, and VEGF genes was significantly higher in untreated SSc fibroblasts versus controls. Euro 5 particle exposure increased the mRNA expression of MMP-2, -7, and -9 in SSc fibroblasts in a dose dependent manner and only at the highest concentration in normal cells. We suggest that environmental DEP could trigger the development of SSc acting on genetically hyperreactive cell systems.

RESUMO

A molecular model is proposed to study the enantioselective adsorption of chiral species on metallic surfaces modified through the preadsorption of another chiral species, known as template surfaces. It is found that anisotropic and exclusive interactions among adsorbed species are essential factors in the enantioselective process. It is shown how the formation of compact structures explains the fact that an enantiomer of species B having the same symmetry as the template species A can be preferentially adsorbed with respect to the other enantiomer of species B, thus producing enantioselectivity. The model predicts enantioselectivity peaks on a limited range of the template coverage, as typically observed experimentally in some systems.

RESUMO

Recently, the dermal fibroblasts (ATCC CRL 1262) of a lethal perinatal variant of osteogenesis imperfecta have been used for the first molecular characterization of a collagen gene defect (Chu, M. L., Williams, C. J., Pepe, G., Hirsch, J. L., Prockop, D. J., and Ramirez, F. (1983) Nature (Lond.) 304, 78-80). These studies revealed that the patient was heterozygous for an internal deletion of approximately 500 base pairs in the pro-alpha 1(I) collagen gene, consistent with previous investigations indicating that CRL 1262 fibroblasts equally synthesized a normal and a shortened pro-alpha 1(I) chain (Barsh, G. S., and Byers, P. H. (1981) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 78, 5142-5146). Cloning and analysis of the affected allele of CRL 1262 has now indicated that the deletion is contained between two introns of the pro-alpha 1(I) gene and results in the elimination of three exons of the triple helical domain. Furthermore, the termini of the rearrangement are located within two short inverted repeats suggesting that the self-complementary nature of these DNA elements may have favored the formation of a DNA secondary structure intermediate which, in turn, served as substrate for the deletion. Evidence are also presented for an elevated Type III collagen mRNA content in the patient fibroblasts.

RESUMO

A mouthwash containing 0.05% cetylpyridium led to a marked reduction in the accumulation of bacterial plaque in a double-blind cross-over trial on 40 subjects. The preparation is thus a sound mean for the prevention of caries and periodontal disease. Its tolerance and subjective satisfaction were excellent.

RESUMO

A simple tube for nasojejunal feeding is described. 22 infants with birthweight less than 1500 g and 25 infants 1500--2000 g were fed during the first weeks of life. The tube elimintes many of the difficulties previously encountered with nasojejunal feeding.
